Add PhotosIn 1816, a group of younger, English-speaking members of the congregation of Saint-Michaels-and-Zion Lutheran Church requested to introduce English into the services. As had happened in 1806 with the formation of Saint John's Lutheran Church, these members met with stark resistance from the German-speaking majority, and decided to form their own congregation.
They began to meet at the Academy on Fourth and Arch Streets, and on January 26th, 1818, officially organized the congregation of St. Matthew's English Lutheran Church. In 1830, a church building, was built on New Street, near Fourth Street. At the same time, a lot was acquired with a small frontage on Noble Street and running along Oster Avenue, between Fifth and Sixth Streets, for a burial ground. The ground abutted that of the First Presbyterian Church of the Northern Liberties on its northeast side.
The small cemetery was sold ca. 1870 and the Edward M. Paxson Public School was erected on the site.
Today, the site is home to a large retail store.
