This German Lutheran Burial Ground on Eighth Street was opened in the mid-to-late late 1700s (land purchases made in 1763, 1776 and 1781) to accommodate burials when the churchyard burial ground at Saint Michael's Lutheran Church a Fifth and Cherry Streets grew too crowded.


This burial ground also served Zion Lutheran Church (on the southeast corner of Fourth Street and Cherry Street, consecrated in 1769 and demolished in 1870), which had no churchyard burial ground of its own.


Many of the remains were removed from 1866 through 1868, some of them to the German Lutheran Cemetery on Lehigh Avenue (formerly located between West Lehigh Avenue and West Huntingdon Street, between North 31st and North 33rd Streets), which was in use from 1861 until 1907 and is now the site of Dr. Ethel Allen School. Other burials were left in place at this burial ground, but no markers were left above ground.


This site was sold in 1868 and is presently occupied by Metro Club Condominium (built in 1970) and its parking lot.
