World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Birmingham, England, he served as a Sergeant in the 2/8th Battalion, London Regiment, British Army. On September 20, 1917, at Ypres, Belgium, when Sergeant Knight's platoon came under very heavy fire from an enemy machine-gun, he rushed and captured it single-handed. Later when all the platoon officers of the company had become casualties, he took command of not only of all the men of his own platoon but of the platoons without officers consolidating and reorganizing the units. For conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross at Buckingham Palace by King George V on January 3, 1918 and later achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After the war, he returned to his job in the service of the Post Office Birmingham, England. He died in his sleep at his home in Edgbaston, at age 72.
