24 OTU's Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V (#Z6639) aircraft, with an aircrew of five, took off for a non-operational training flight. The crew was inexperienced and flew into some bad weather conditions, resulting in the aircraft's crashing into high ground about 200yds from the Royal Observer Corps post at Broadway Tower; the entire crew, except for the rear gunner who sustained serious injuries, were killed on impact. The rear gunner late died of his injuries.
