Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Uitenhage, South Africa, he served as a Lieutenant in the 78th Highlanders, Regiment of Foot, British Army. On August 12, 1857, at the entrenched village in front of Busherutgunge, India, the redoubt was occupied by the enemy who were causing heavy casualties among the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was decided to take the position by storm and Lieutenant Crowe being the first in, followed by his men, took the position and the redoubt was captured. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Captain and awarded the Victoria Cross on January 15, 1858. He was also the first born South African to be vested with the Victoria Cross. He remained in the Army and was a Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 1st Battalion 10th Regiment of Foot, when he died at age 50 in London, England.
