GERHARDT, DANA - age 69, of Knoxville, passed away suddenly Thursday evening, June 27, 2013. Dana was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and had a special interest in the church children's program. She was born December 10, 1943, in Monmouth, Illinois, to Charles E. and Jean Richard Gerhardt. Dana was a graduate of Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia, and attended the University of Illinois. She was a physical trainer for Montana State University and Oregon State University Athletic Departments. She was a proud veteran of the US Air Force and served with the Peace Corps in Antigua. She retired from Torrence, California Schools, where she was a special education teacher's aide, signing for Courtney Fennell. Dana was an avid swimmer and quilter, and a member of the Smoky Quilting Guild. For the past two years, she competed as a member of her family relay team in the Trideltathon triathlon. Dana is survived by her brothers, Dr. Reid Gerhardt and wife, Nanc,y of Knoxville, Lane Gerhardt Sr. and wife, Debbie, of Alcoa; very special niece, Shannon Augé and husband, Oz; special nephew, Brant Gerhardt; nephews, Lane Gerhardt Jr., Tyson Gerhardt, Zachary Gerhardt; nieces, Whitney Hinderlight, Kali Gerhardt; grandnieces, Lindsay, Hailie and Sadie Gerhardt; grandnephew, Jake Gerhardt. Family and friends will gather at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 East Gov. John Sevier Highway, for graveside services with full military honors conferred by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:45 p.m. followed by a celebration of life at 4:00 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 7535 Maynardville Highway, with Rev. Charla Sherbakoff officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church.
