Phyllis M. Schmeling, age 91, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel in Watertown with Reverend Ken Nelson officiating.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday at the Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel and will continue on Sunday for one hour prior to the services.

Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.

Honorary Pallbearers will be grandsons: Tim Schmeling, Troy Schmeling, Brett Schmeling and Travis Schmeling.

Pallbearers will be Rick Struss, Gail Struss, Lyle Margeson, Butch Margeson,
Terry Legg and Don Kelly.

Phyllis Mae Schmeling was born on March 27, 1922 to Winiford and Lena (Welch) Margeson in Junius, SD. She graduated from Lake County School on June 5, 1936.

On May 19, 1943 she married Gilmore Schmeling at South Shore, SD. To this union four children were born, Barbara, David, Danny and Bonnie. The couple farmed west of South Shore until 1948 when they moved to Lead, SD, and Gilmore worked for the Homestake Gold Mine. In 1955 they moved to San Manuel, AZ and lived there until 1964 when they moved to a farm near Altamont, SD. From there they moved to Stockholm, SD where they owned and operated Village Grocery. In 1978

Phyllis and Gilmore moved to Watertown, and Phyllis was employed at Memorial Hospital and then at Prairie Lakes Hospital for 18 years, retiring in 1996. She had received the Rose award for her excellent work.

Phyllis was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She loved gardening and all kinds of crafts. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, two children, Barbara Moreno and David Schmeling; her sisters and brothers, Bea Struss, Donna Jean Legg, George and Bud Margeson.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Danny (Pat) Schmeling of Watertown, SD and Bonnie (Bill) Corbett of Port St. Lucie, FL; her daughter-in-law, Joann Schmeling of Prairie Village, KS; her son-in-law, Randy Moreno of Sahuarita, AZ; nine grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews.
