Lois Pauline (Erickson) Hoelzle

Lois Pauline (Erickson) Hoelzle peacefully passed away in the autumn sun on October 20, 2013, at home in the company of loved ones, a month before her 95th birthday.

Lois was born on November 20th, 1918 in Roundup, Montana to Paul and Lydia (Frels) Erickson. Two years later her brother and only sibling Herbert Leif "Bud" Erickson was born. After a few years on the Montana ranch the family settled on a farm in Brookings County, South Dakota where the young Lois and Bud grew up with many aunts, uncles and cousins just a horse and buggy ride away.

Lois went to a teachers' college and South Dakota State after graduating from Volga High School (they had the same "fight song" as Cottage Grove High School, much to her delight!) and began a teaching career that spanned the years 1938-1980. One of her early teaching positions was in a one room sod schoolhouse in South Dakota. Later she moved to Oregon where she obtained her B.S. from University of Oregon before moving to La Grande to teach.

Lois married Robert Martin "Bob" Hoelzle in 1948, and settled in Portland in 1951, where they raised their two daughters Gail and Roberta. When the girls were in elementary school Lois resumed teaching. During her long career she received many "best teacher" awards and accolades, and had former students keep in touch with her years after her retirement.

When she retired in 1980 Lois remained active in her Lutheran Church choir and study, and pursued with typical delight her gardening, reading, sewing, theatre and travel passions, as well as providing tender home-care for her father until his passing in 1987 at the age of 99.

In 1989 Bob and Lois moved to Cottage Grove to be near their family. The last two years of their 43 year marriage were spent enjoying their family and new friends in the town they had come to appreciate so much, filled with gratitude for all Cottage Grove had to offer ~ from the Cottage Theatre to arguably the best hospice in the state. Bob died of cancer at home in 1991.

Lois continued her energetic and positive approach to everything: family and church activities, bowling and golf, the Cottage Theatre, and with her two best friends (both had been her bridesmaids!) travels around the USA and the globe. The spirited women made many trips to the coast and Ashland, and had amazing adventures in Europe, China, twice thru the Panama Canal, and more. Lois will always be remembered as an extraordinary person who was witty and kind and brought out the best in all whose lives she touched.

Besides many loving friends Lois is survived by daughters Gail Hoelzle (Greg Lee) and Roberta "Birdy" Hoelzle (Scott Burgwin), Alice Doyle, Kerstin Noren, and grandchildren Anna (Markos Sifakakis), Megan, Sam (Sarah Reynolds) and many treasured cousins in the midwest, Sweden and Norway. Her brother Bud died in Germany in March, 1945. Bud was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

An open house to celebrate the life of Lois Hoelzle will be from 3-6 P.M. on Wednesday, November 20th (her 95th birthday) at 200 W. Grant Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cottage Grove Humane Society, the Cottage Theatre, Trinity Lutheran Church, or a charity of choice. Smith Lund Mills in care of the arrangements.
