Hamilton College, NY granted him the degree of Ph.D. in 1866 and Union College, New York granted him the degree of LL.D. in 1869.
He was put in charge of a school in Jefferson, MD in 1838. In 1849 he became a Professor at Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, PA, where he served until his death.
During the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) his home housed Union soldiers on the upper floor in a make-shift hospital.
