Co-editor of the "Evangelical Review" 1849-1862, editor of the "Evangelical Quarterly Review" 1862-1870.
Wrote "Memoir of the Life and Times of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg" and "Memorial of Rev. Philip F. Mayer, D.D".
Hamilton College, NY granted him the degree of Ph.D. in 1866 and Union College, New York granted him the degree of LL.D. in 1869.
He was put in charge of a school in Jefferson, MD in 1838. In 1849 he became a Professor at Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, PA, where he served until his death.
During the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) his home housed Union soldiers on the upper floor in a make-shift hospital.
