On the morning of December 31, 2014, Dan, a loving husband, pops, opa, son, nephew and loyal friend, lost his battle with depression. He was 49 years young.

Dan was born in Cheverly, Maryland, on October 25, 1965. He was the only child of Ginger and Max Hupfer. He graduated from Bowie Senior High School and earned a Bachelor's of Business Administration from James Madison University. After working at a number of jobs, to include delivering the Washington Post while in high school, and serving as a carpenter's helper, Dan chose a career in computer sciences. He worked for over 25 years as a federal employee Computer Specialist at the US General Services Administration.

Dan began playing music at an early age and rocked the trumpet all through high school, eventually picking up the guitar as his instrument of choice and giving us years of enjoyment listening to him play. He combined his loves of music and technology by creating videos of his guitar playing and sharing them with younger family members, encouraging them to play as well.

A man with many interests, Dan was an outdoorsman, hiker, biker, and golfer (with an"interesting" stance). Grade A skier who was not afraid to wipe out on the bunny slope at Massanutten. Dan was an all around sports fan, dividing his allegiance between the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens (with attendance at occasional Orioles and Nationals baseball games watching from the nose bleed seats). He was an avid cigar connoisseur, (not just on the golf course), and a champion of all movie and music trivia contests. Dan was also a fierce competitor in the family fantasy football league, playing each year under the name of VA MAYHEM IS BACK!

But when it came to concerts, Dan went all out for his favorite band Rush. He also enjoyed catching performances of even earlier rockers, such as Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones with Kathy and his cousins. Dan had a blast at the 9:30 club rocking the upper level banister and even danced on the Wolf Trap lawn.

Dan was an awesome cook who liked to perform culinary safaris in the kitchen. He loved his pizza and burgers, but was never afraid to make something exotic to eat. Give him a recipe and you could be assured that although he left the kitchen looking like a tornado had swept through it, he would always produce a delicious meal.

He was a constant traveler to places far and close, from Greece to Poland, and New York to California (not to mention the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico). He was a strong supporter of causes close to his heart.

Dan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Evelyn and Harry Lillard, Herbert and Laura Hupfer, mother, Ginger (Lillard) Hupfer, uncles Gerard Clancy and James Hupfer, and friend, Scott Broaddus.

Dan is survived by his wife Katarzyna Krolak, son Michael Sebastian Krolak, granddaughter Eva Josefina Krolak, father, Max Hupfer, aunt, Carole Clancy, aunt and uncle, Jeannie and William Hennessy, parents-in-law, Halina and William Shadle, Jr., cousins, Pat and Pam Clancy, Mark and Dawn Clancy, second cousins, Ryan, Katie Erin, Sean, Colin and Corey Clancy.

A celebration of life gathering for family and friends will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015 from 3:00 to 5:30 pm at Jefferson Funeral Chapel located at 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the following organizations: National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI); American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP); National Association for Music Education; or the Phoenix Landing Foundation.
