Mary Eleanor Bigland was born on Feb 6 1865 in Applethwaite Windermere Westmorland England. Her parents were John Bigland a tenant farmer and Eleanor Laycock Bigland. In 1871 she was living with her family at Lower Millerground a beautiful old cottage on the shores of Lake Windermere. She helped out with her younger siblings and with rowing the small ferry boat which ran from the landing there - hence the surprise among the Canadian cowmen that she was a strong rower.

Mary travelled to Calgary in 1888 with one of her three Laycock uncles, William, Joseph and Thomas who all settled in Calgary to farm cattle and are all buried there. She was nurse to both her widowed aunt Ann, wife of William Laycock, and the wife of Fred Stimson of the Bar U Ranch, This explains why in 1891 she was included twice on the census at Ann's lodging house in Calgary where she was living and at the Bar U Ranch listed next to Everett Johnson where I imagine she actually spent the night which counted for the census residence! Mary went on to marry Everett Cyril Johnson on Nov 18, 1891 at the Bar U Ranch.

She was followed to Canada by Four siblings. Earnest Bigland 1879 -1961 who worked for the CPR and whose descendants live in Vancouver. Emily Hale Bigland 1883 Windermere - 1985 Vancouver who married Ivor Edward Cecil Rice Jones in Calgary and Lucy Bigland Jul 31 1885 Windermere who emigrated to Canada in 1903, married Thomas N Cuthbert and died Calgary Jan 23 1979, and Christopher Bigland 1890-1934
