James was educated at Kensington School. At St John's College, Cambridge he became the 18th Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos of 1869. He lectured on Acoustics at the Royal College of Music, was a Fellow and Senior Mathematical Master at King's College, London for 9 years and Headmaster of Derby School from 1889-1898

James was one of the great British composers of the 19th century who was knighted 24 Mar 1871 - he was also author of 'Life of William Sterndale Bennett' and a contributor to Grove's Musical Dictionary

James married Mabel Agnes Gaskell
