Gail V. Mitchell was born to John and Iva Brumback Mitchell in Kansas. His mother died young at the age of 34. When his father died in 1908, Gail lived with his sister Hallie and her husband. Gail likely worked with Hallie's husband Harry Wiard on the railroad during this period of time. In 1915, Gail attended the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College in Stillwater. He likely met Mary Storrie at this college when she was employed there as a stewardess in the girl's dorm, and they married Dec. 17, 1917 in Fort Worth, Texas. Gail was unable to finish college during this time as he was called away to war. He became a Captain in the 110th Engineers; 35th Division. After the war, Gail worked as a machinist; CRI&P and then became a farmer first in Archer, Texas and then Wichita, Texas. Gail and Mary had two sons; Hamilton Crawford and William Gail Mitchell. Both sons died 17 days apart in different states in 1988 (California and Louisiana).
