Martin L. Christianson Sr., 83, of West Salem died with his family by his side on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

He was born Nov. 9, 1922, in the town of Farmington, Wet Coulee, to Simon and Inga (Almos) Christianson.

On Nov. 15, 1947, he married Vivian Freng at Bethel Lutheran Church in La Crosse.

Martin was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 6th Armored Division in the European Theatre.

He was employed as a welder for 21 years with Allis Chalmers in La Crosse and 18 years with International Harvester in Libertyville, Ill. Martin retired, and in 1986 he and his wife moved to West Salem.

He enjoyed making crafts, was an avid card player, a Packers fan and also a Brewers baseball fan. Martin was a former member of Gunderson-Gilbertson American Legion Post 507 of Mindoro, Wis., and a current member of Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem. He was also a member of the U.A.W.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Hansen; an infant sister, Adeline Rose Christianson; and three brothers, Lester, Stanley and Willard Christianson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Bells Coulee Lutheran Church, rural Bangor. The Rev. Ron Nowland will officiate. Burial will be in Burns Cemetery, with military honors by West Salem American Legion Post 51 and the U.S. Military Funeral Honors Program.
