Lillie Eiland, née Triest, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully on December 28, 2015, after several years of declining health.
Lillie was born March 22, 1928, to Sydney and Mattie Triest in the rural north Florida farming community of Theressa.
At age 18, she married Marvin J. Eiland, a Southern Baptist country preacher she met at a church revival, and devoted the rest of her life to her husband, their two sons, and to spreading the Gospel. Lillie and Marvin were involved in churches throughout Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina. In 1963, they founded the Baptist Mission in Inglis, working without any salary for the first year. The second year saw an increase in pay: $25 per week for Marvin. Lillie still worked for free. The Mission eventually grew into what is known today as the First Baptist Church of Inglis.
In addition to her church duties, Lillie loved camping, fishing, canning and preserving, and gardening. She patiently attempted to teach her stubborn grandchildren all these skills, with varying degrees of success. She grew and arranged many of the flowers used for arrangements at First Baptist and the Evangelical Free Church in Yankeetown.
Though she was of modest means, Lillie gave sacrificially for many years to support translators working on the New Testament for the Manubu' tribe of the Philippines. She was an exemplar of faith and charity for her family and for her community ... one who could also play a cut-throat game of Skip Bo.
Lillie was preceded in death by her twin sister, Eva Mae Kuykendall of Keystone Heights; brothers Thomas and Irving Triest of Keystone Heights and Leon Triest of Ft. Gordon, GA; and her eldest son, Terry Eiland of Crystal River.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Marvin J. Eiland of Inglis; brother Ernest Triest of Starke; son Andrew Eiland and his wife Kathleen, of Inglis; daughter-in-law Linda Eiland of Crystal River; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing and visitation begin at 9 am on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the First Baptist Church of Inglis, 1001 State Hwy 40 East, Inglis. Services will be held at 10 am at First Baptist, with the interment to follow at Cedars of Lebanon Cemetery. Luncheon will be served afterward in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Lillie's memory to her favorite Bible translator: Gene Trudeau, c/o New Tribes Mission, 100 East 1st Street, Sanford, FL 32771-1487. Arrangements are under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home, Crystal River.
