Stanley M. Woodward, M.D. was born December 30, 1923, in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Valin R. Woodward of Arlington, where he grew up. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1940. He entered (now) University of Texas/Arlington in 1940 and transferred to University of Texas at Austin in 1942. From 1944 to 1946 he served as an officer in the U.S. Maritime Service. After his military service, he returned to the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with honors in 1948. While at the University, he was president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, president of Interfraternity Council, a Goodfellow, and a member of the Silver Spurs. He graduated from the University of Texas, Galveston Medical School in 1952. After interning at Wichita Falls Clinic Hospital, he entered the U.S. Army Medical Corp as a 1st Lt. He was discharged in 1955 and opened his practice in Family Medicine in New Braunfels, Texas. He served as president of the following: Comal County Medical Society, New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, New Braunfels Wurstfest Association, Comal County Red Cross, Lions Club, and the Guada-Coma District Boy Scouts of America. He was chairman of the McKenna Memorial Hospital Foundation. Dr. Woodward was vice-president and director of Hospice New Braunfels, a member of Lions Club since 1955, director of the Sophienburg Museum, New Braunfels Conservation Society, New Braunfels Industrial Foundation, M Bank, Heritage Society, Comal County Fair Association, and the United Fund. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, Texas Academy of Family Practice and the American Academy of Family Practice. He was also a member of the Longhorn Foundation and the Littlefield Society of the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Woodward was a charter member of the Hummel Museum. He was active in the New Braunfels Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder and a trustee. Stanley served as co-chairman of the New Braunfels Charter Writing Committee and served on the New Braunfels City Council for six years and was mayor from 1971-72. Dr. Woodward received several awards during his life, including the Besserung Award in 1979, Distinguished Alumni of the University of Texas Arlington in 1976, Honors Hall, New Braunfels, Life Member Blue Coats, Life Member New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, Melvin Jones Award International Lions Club in 2000, Associate Professor of Family Practice UT Health Science Center. He was one of the first recipients of the ``Legends of New Braunfels' award presented by the Braunfels Foundation. He mentored in the New Braunfels school system, did photography for the archives for the Sophienburg Museum, and eye testing for the Lions Club in the local school districts. Dr. Woodward is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise; his daughter, Valin Miller and husband Joe, daughter, Sarah Shea and husband Barry, and two granddaughters, Parker and Regan Shea; and brothers, Valin R. Woodward, Morgan Woodward, Lewis Woodward and Lee Woodward.
