Gerald was the son of Vincent L. Stubstad and Anne M. Stubstad of Chicago Illinois and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve on November 5, 1965 in Chicago and on on November 16 he was assigned on active duty for a period of two years. In Vietnam PFC Stubstad was assigned to and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

At the beginning of July, the Battalion continued with normal security and combat operations in the vicinity of DaNang in Quang Nam Province and in the second half of the month began participating on Operation HASTINGS in northern Quang Tri Province.

On July 15,with the Battalion forward Command post at Dong Ha deployments of troops to Landing Zones began to depart. After prepping Landing Zone "Crow" in the Song Ngan (River) valley, a flight of helicopters began to insert the Marines from their aircraft. The first few insertions were without incident but on the third attempt a CH 46-D from HMM 265 was hit by enemy ground fire and crashed, there were four crew members, and twelve Marines onboard, twelve men were killed in the crash. PFC Stubstad was one of the casualties he died as a result of burns to his body.
