British Diplomat. He served as the British Ambassador to Spain (1900 to 1903) and Ambassador to the US (1903 to 1906). His father was Major General Sir Henry Marion Durand, a British Indian Army officer and the colonial administrator of Vadodara (formerly Baroda), India. In 1873 he entered the Indian Civil Service where he served as the Political Secretary at Kabul (1878 to 1880), Foreign Secretary of India (1884 to 1894), and Minister plenipotentiary at Tehran (1894 to 1900). After returning to England from his US ambassadorship in 1906, he devoted his time to his literary works, including "Nadir Shah: An Historical Novel" (1908) and "The Life of Field-Marshal Sir George White, V.C." (1915). He then returned to present-day Pakistan where he died at the age of 74. Among his awards and decorations include the Knight Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (1888), Knight Commander, Order of the Star of India (1894), and The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (1900). The Durand Line, which is the international boundary established between Afghanistan and modern-day Pakistan, is named in his honor.
