Ruth Sievert, age 82, of Huron, died Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the SunQuest Health Care Center. Her memorial service was Monday, March 20th, at the Grace Episcopal Church. Committal service preceded the funeral at the Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth’s memory may be sent to Grace Episcopal Church, 16th and McClellan, Huron, or the P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312.

Ruth Ellen Fuller Sievert was born on March 16, 1935 in Huron. She graduated from Huron High School in 1953 and Huron College in 1957. She married her husband, Richard “Dick” Sievert, on August 17, 1957. She taught school from 1957 to 1963 in Watertown, Sinai, and Huron. Their children, Elizabeth “Libby” and John, were born in 1964 and 1968.

Ruth was a leader and professional volunteer throughout her adult life. She served on the vestry and as parish secretary of Grace Episcopal Church in Huron. She was a member and president of Chapter AN, P.E.O. and the South Dakota P.E.O. State Board, and member and chair of the national P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund Board. She served on the Huron School Board from 1982 to 1999, and as president for several years. She also served the Associated School Boards of South Dakota, as president from 1990 to 1991. Ruth received the Lusk Award for Outstanding Community Service in the field of education in 1995 and the Huron Educator of the Year Award in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her parents, A.M. and Ellen Fuller; sister, Shirley Fuller Sweesy; and brother-in-law, Glenn Sweesy.

She is survived by her husband, Dick; children, Libby and John; son-in-law, Mark; daughter-in-law, Gail; and grandchildren, Samantha and Emily Berman and Jack and Austin Sievert.
