Lewis, Ex-Cub Ex-Cub Ex-Cub Secretary, Dies Robert C. Bob Lewis, former, traveling secretary of the Chicago Cubs, died. yesterday in Wesley Memorial hospital hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 72. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow in the chapel at 5501 N. Ashland Av. The wake will be held there today at 4 p. m. Lewis had retired in 1959, after becoming one of baseball's baseball's most colorful personalities. He served as the Cubs' traveling secretary for 32 years and was with the organization organization 35 years overall. He helped move the club from coast to coast and from border ' to border under nine managers. When he became secretary in 1927, the Cubs' field manager was Joe McCarthy. Successively, he plotted train and plane movements of the , Cubs under Rogers Hornsby, Charlie Grimm, Gabby Hartnett, Jimmy Wilson, Frank Frisch, Phil Cavarretta, Stan Hack, and Bob Scheffing. Lewis, in 1969, was presented the top award of the Chicago Chicago Old Timers' Baseball association. Lewis, who was preceded in death by his wife Beverly, is survived by one daughter.
