British Royal Navy Rear Admiral. He served in the British Navy from 1763 until his death, and also served as a close friend, advisor and courtier to Prince George (future King George IV) before and during his first regency. He was educated at Dr. Bracken's Academy in Greenwich and later attended the Royal Naval Academy at Portsmouth. In 1769 he joined HMS Quebec and served briefly in the West Indies. After returning to England, he joined HMS Bristol and participated in the American Revolutionary War (Battle of Sullivan's Island). Shortly afterward, he joined HMS Eagle in New York City to serve as Admiral Lord Howe's aide-de-camp. Following the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War, he took command of HMS Russell in 1793, joining the Channel Fleet under Lord Howe. During the Atlantic campaign of May 1794, he participated in the naval battle with the French fleet known as the Glorious First of June, and for his service, he was rewarded with a gold medal in 1795. He also served as a member of the British Parliament for Huntingdon from 1787 until 1796. He died at the age of 51.
