ALFRED MERRILL BOYINGTON, 91, longtime professor of music and director of orchestra at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, Washington, passed away on March 4, 1999 in a Palm Desert, California convalescence center.

Boyington came to Pullman in 1933 as an instructor of violin and director of orchestra at
what was then Washington State College. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1941. In
1942, he was granted a military leave during World War II when he served in the United States Navy. He resumed his teaching at WSU in 1946 and was promoted to associate professor the same year. During the 1946-47 academic year, he was elevated to the rank of professor. He retired in 1973 as Professor Emeritus of Music.

Throughout his professional career at WSU, he taught violin and directed the orchestra.
He was born October 17, 1907, to Gertrude (Rohrer) and Schuyler Stephen Boyington in Osawatomie, Kansas. His father was employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

He had a twin sister who was Alvah Meredith Boyington and she was married to Raymond Arnold Disney who was an older brother to Walt Disney, (Walter Elias Disney), and an older sister who was Wanda Mae Boyington. Both sisters often would accompany Alfred on the piano and harp when he performed in many venues throughout his lifetime.

After graduating from Northeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1925, Boyington spent
two years studying at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Then he was awarded special scholarships in the private study of music in France and Germany for two years. He earned a Master's Degree in Music at the Julliard School in New York City in 1933. He also completed a Master's of Music degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1953.

Survivors include his widow, Elizabeth (Earle) Boyington of Palm Desert, a 1950 WSU
graduate in education, and two sons, Paul Stephen Boyington, Culver City, California who attended art classes at WSU when he was a student at Pullman High School and later Paul became a film director in Hollywood, California, and David Merrill Boyington of Vancouver a 1978 WSU graduate in Civil Engineering.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin sister Meredith A. Disney and his older sister Wanda Mae Boyington Yates.

Alfred was buried in the Coachella Valley Public Cemetery in Riverside, California.
