South African Anti-Apartheid Activist and Politician. She was born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela. She studied social work at the Jan Hofmeyr School. In 1958, she married Nelson Mandela, they were married for 38 years, including 27 years during which he was imprisoned. Although they were still married at the time of his becoming president of South Africa in May 1994, the couple had separated two years earlier. Their divorce was finalized on March 19, 1996. In 1969‚ she became one of the first detainees under Section 6 of the notorious Terrorism Act of 1967. She was detained for 18 months in solitary confinement in a condemned cell at Pretoria Central Prison before being charged under the Suppression of Communism Act of 1950. January 2018, she was given an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, in recognition of her fight against apartheid in South Africa from the University Council and University Senate of Makerere University, in Kampala, Uganda, the top-most academic and administrative organs of the university. She suffered from diabetes and recently underwent several major surgeries, she 'had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She died after a long illness.
