Robert E. Fairchild, 91, of Mountainside, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral from the Sullivan Funeral Home, 146 East 2nd Ave., Roselle, on Saturday, April 21, at 8:00 am, thence to the Church of St. Joseph the Carpenter, Roselle, where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:00 am. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 5 - 9 pm. Born in Utica, New York, Mr. Fairchild moved to New Jersey in 1947 to attend Stevens Institute of Technology from which he received a degree of Mechanical Engineer. Active as a representative in the Stevens Alumni Association, he received and Anniversary Achievement Award in 1971 for outstanding effort on behalf of the Association. He was past Secretary of his Alumni graduating Class and a former Class President. Mr. Fairchild was employed by Exxon Company USA at their Bayonne Plant for over 40 years, retiring in 1992 as the Senior Staff Engineer. He was a former Trustee of the Church of St. Joseph the Carpenter, where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and past President of the Guard of Honor. In 1995 he received the Parish Centennial Award for his many years of service to the Parish community. Mr. Fairchild was also active in the St. Joseph's Scouting organizations for over 35 years. He served as a Webelos den leader in Cub Pack 60 and also as a committeeman. He was a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 160 for many years. He received Scouting's Silver Beaver Award in 1988, having previously received the religious Awards of the Bronze Pelican and St. George Medals. Mr. Fairchild was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3946 of Roselle. He was also a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a member of the American Legion, Post 3 of Westfield. He served in the Navy during WWII. Mr. Fairchild moved from Roselle to Mountainside in 1979 and was a member of the Mountainside Active Retirees and the Mountainside Senior Citizens Club. He was also a member of the Bayonne Exxon Annuitants Club. Mr. Fairchild was predeceased by his beloved wife, Josephine Fairchild in 2002. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to the Mountainside Rescue Squad, 1399 US-22, Mountainside, NJ 07092.
