Toby Michael Henningsen, 87
Aug. 12, 1930 - June 28, 2018

ELK HORN – Toby Michael Henningsen, son of Anton Michael Theodor and Leona Dagmar (Christensen) Henningsen, was born Aug. 12, 1930, in Clay Township, Shelby County. He was baptized Sept. 21, 1930, and confirmed March 25, 1945, at Elk Horn Lutheran Church, Elk Horn. Toby attended country school at Clay #7, southwest of Kimballton, and Elk Horn High School with the class of 1948.

Toby married Beverly Jean Larsen on Dec. 15, 1950, at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE. To this union were born three sons: Gerry Michael, Randall Lee, and Jamie Lynn. Toby and Beverly had strong work ethics and earned livings at multiple jobs, including - for Toby: crop and livestock farmer – first with parents and then 11 years on a farm southeast of Elk Horn, truck driver for Olsen Produce and local dairies and creameries, carpenter, feed salesman for Walnut Grove, service station mechanic, local grocery store owner and employee with HyVee, meat cutter at and owner of custom locker plants, and food caterer. These jobs resulted in residences at many southwest Iowa communities: Elk Horn, Kimballton, Jacksonville, Exira, Hancock, Massena, Atlantic and Oakfield Township in Audubon County.

Toby worked hard all his life, but also played hard, enjoying most outdoor sports and indoor activities that involved his family and friends; he readily made many new friends with ease. Fishing and hunting of all varieties, plus baseball and softball, were his favorite outdoor pasttimes; most summer vacations were spent at northern USA or Ontario lakes. Toby was a good athlete, who was a semi-pro baseball pitcher and starred on local softball teams. He enjoyed trap-shooting, and raised some of the first pheasants released for hunting in the local area. Toby was a competitive card player, regularly enjoyed with friends; he also liked bowling, golf and billiards. He was a lifelong member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.

Toby died Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, after sudden worsening of prolonged heart disease while suffering from arthritis. Besides his parents, Toby was preceded in death by his sister Jacqueline and her husband Raynold Jensen of Harlan, two other brothers-in-law: James Larsen of Kimballton and Johnny Jacobsen of Elk Horn, grandson Tyler Brix of Marne, and parents-in-law Harvey and Anna (Evans) Larsen from the Elk Horn area.

Toby is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beverly (Larsen) Henningsen, Atlantic; children: Gerry Henningsen and wife Jill (Curry), Monument, CO; Randy Henningsen and wife Mary (Hoilien), Marne; and Jamie Henningsen, Atlantic; eight grandchildren: Tyler Henningsen, Durham, NC; Krystal Showers, Ridgeway, VA; Adria Henningsen, Council Bluffs; Jeremy Brix, Elk Horn; Nick Brix, Marne; Jenny Henningsen, Audubon; Deric Henningsen, Exira; and Pat Henningsen, Waukee; 11 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Rose Ann (Petersen-Larsen) Poldberg and Barbara (Larsen) Jacobsen of Elk Horn; many nieces and nephews; and other family members and friends.

A funeral service was held July 7 at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.
