During the War the Nazi's conscripted men from the occupied areas of Alsace - Lorraine, many of whom had German names. After the liberation the French gathered up anyone with possible German sympathies, including the wives and children of the conscripted soldiers .They moved them to an ex POW camp - Chauvinerie Camp near Poitiers. The camp had been previously used by the Germans to hold prisoners who were deemed unfit to stand on German soil, mostly from parts of Africa.

The conditions were appalling and of 64/65 babies born there between February and November 1945 not one survived.

From March to October 1945 - 265 people died including 51 women and 66 children, mostly from starvation and disease. They were buried nearby but in 1963 the remains were moved to Mont de Huisnes.
