Composer. He was best known for his work in various genres of music during a career that spanned eight decades. Born Andreas Ludwig Priwin, his family fled Germany when he was young and eventually settled in Los Angeles, California. He earned a job at MGM, while still in high school, after they had heard a music arrangement he did for a local radio station. He went on to work for MGM until the early 1960s and was part of the music side of such films as "Kiss Me Kate" (1953), "Kismet" (1955), "The Catered Affair" (1956), and "Bells Are Ringing" (1960). He also earned Academy Award nominations for his work in the films "Gigi" (1958), "Porgy and Bess" (1959), "Irma La Douce" (1963) and "My Fair Lady" (1964). During the 1960s, he partnered with second wife, Dory, on numerous films. While working at MGM, he also made a name for himself as a jazz pianist, both performing solo and with other musicians. In the late 1960s, he turned to conducting and went on to serve as the conductor for such well-known orchestras as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 1980s, he returned to jazz and released over two dozen recordings. He also wrote several operas and was on the music side of several Broadway productions. He earned numerous awards and honors for his career work through the years. In the 1970s, he was married to actress Mia Farrow.
