Nauruan Statesman. He served as the President of Nauru from November 15, 2011, to June 11, 2013. Before entering politics, he was a weightlifter who represented Nauru in many international competitions, and was the Nauru national weightlifting champion in 1995 and 1996. He was a founding member of the Nauru First party, and was elected to the Parliament of Nauru in 2004. As President, he advocated for action to combat climate change. He also supported reopening the Australian asylum seeker processing center in Nauru. He did not seek reelection in 2013. After leaving the presidency, he became part of the opposition to President Baron Waqa, and was involved in a court case as part of the "Nauru 19," of which he was cleared of any wrongdoing in 2018. Diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2018, he sought treatment and asylum in Australia. He died from cancer while undergoing treatment in New South Wales, Australia.
