Barbara A. Humphreys Burlison, 84, of Troy, MO ,passed away on May 23, 2019 at St. Joseph Hospital West of Lake St. Louis, MO.She was born February 1,1935, the daughter of Eugene Ralph and Florence (Wood) Humphreys, in Sedalia, MO. She is survived by three children, James David (Jan) Burlison of Troy, Laura Mandela of Reston, Virginia, and Andrew Jefferson (Cindy) of Columbia, ; her brother, John Richard (Jamie)Humphreys of Fulton, ; two grandsons, four granddaughters, two step-granddaughters, two great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters, one step- great-grandson and one step-great-granddaughter, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Barbara was previously married to the late United States Representative Bill D. Burlison who had lived in Advance, MO.
She attended Hickman High School, Columbia, MO, and was a graduate of William Woods University (College) Fulton, MO and the University of Missouri-Columbia. At William Woods she received the Vera Chenowith Equitation Award, was a member of several choral groups, and was an editor of both the student newspaper and yearbook at William Woods. At the University, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority, Theta Sigma Phi, Women in Journalism, "The Maneater" student newspaper, and University Singers. As an alumna, she was active in Tri-Delta House Corporation and the alumnae board of William Woods College. She was a member of several Democratic women's organizations in Missouri and Washington, D.C., and organizations of the First Baptist Church, Columbia, and Troy First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. While living in the Washington area, she was active in the Boy Scouts, the Capitol Area Council of the Girl Scouts of America, the Congressional Club, an officer in several PTA organizations, and an officer of a national organization of Democratic women. She was a member of the Mizzou Alumni Association. She loved reading, knitting and playing bridge when she could find other like minded people.
Barbara worked on newspapers in Virginia and Missouri and retired from the University of Missouri-Columbia as its Student Publications Coordinator in 2002. She was named Missouri's Outstanding Student Publications Advisor in 1994 and was active in the state and national organizations of college media advisors. She moved to Troy after her retirement from the University.
Barbara enjoyed telling of her experiences in door-to-door campaigning, as well as adventures in Washington, D.C., and growing up in central Missouri. She loved her many pets, and never met and animal she didn't like. She was an advocate for adoption of pets from "no-kill" rescue groups where she had found all her pets.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. at First Christian Church in Troy, MO
Memorial Service will also be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 12 p.m. at First Christian Church in Troy, MO Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Moore to officiate.
