Dutch Royalty. Princess Christina of the Netherlands, House of Orange-Nassau, sister of former Queen Beatrix, youngest daughter of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard, and aunt of King Willem-Alexander, the current king of the Netherlands. Her mother contracted German measles when pregnant with Christina, who was born almost blind in Soestdijk Palace. When she married a commoner, Jorge Guillermo, and later divorced him, she renounced her right of succession to the Dutch throne. She was a very talented singer and released several CDs, something she would not have been able to do if she had remained in the royal succession. Because of her near blindness, her mother hired a "faith healer," which caused a crisis among royals as they thought she was influencing the queen's decisions. Christina recently sold a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens at auction in New York for $8.2 million, including $1.2 million in auction costs. She had sold several other art works there as well, and the princess amassed almost 8 million euros in those transactions. Because she did not offer the Rubens painting to Dutch museums first, she was widely criticized in the Netherlands. She died of bone cancer.
