Statesman, President of Nicaragua. He served from 1 March 1871 to 1 March 1875. Prior to becoming president he was a prominent businessman and member of the Conservative Party. He was a wealthy landowner and his wealth and power came from interests in banking, agriculture, and mining. He is best remembered for implementing a system of checks and balances, restoring credit to the country's credit, replenishing the treasury, and introducing the war-torn nation with much-needed infrastructure improvements and projects. He also made educational, judicial, and scientific reforms that were put into practice. When his term ended, he retired to spend time with his family, supervise his business and write.
