Statesman, President of Honduras. He served from 18 April 1907 to 28 March 1911. Prior to becoming president he was a lawyer and served in the military attaining the rank of general. He fought in various wars in which Honduras was involved. He then served in a number of Honduran government posts including Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Minister of War, Acting Minister of War in 1900, Minister of Justice and Public Instruction, and vice president. He is best remembered for reforming the country’s armed forces and attempting to establish a military academy. He encouraged banana companies and executed a railroad agreement with the Standard Fruit Company. Agitated by the agreement, the Cuyamel Fruit Company and General Manuel Bonilla organized a rebellion. The United States intervened and he resigned as president. He then retired from politics and returned to his hometown.
