President of Uruguay. He served from March 1, 1835 to October 24, 1838. Prior to becoming president, he served as a volunteer at the beginning of the revolution of independence in the Rio de la Plata. He was a member of the Treinta y Tres Orientales, the legendary 33 nationalists who successfully fought for Uruguayan independence in the Cisplatine War between 1825 through 1828. He and the former president, Fructuoso Rivera, became political enemies and fought in conflicts for years. Those who supported Rivera came to be called Colorados and the others Blanco. He is best remembered for getting the public debt managed, creation of a retirement and pension system and founding the University of the Republic in 1838. He was forced into exile in Europe by the Colorados from 1853 to 1855. He then retired.
