Betty Rose Ely
Tuesday, April 30th, 1929 - Saturday, January 9th, 2021

With profound sadness, we announce the death of our beloved mother, Betty Rose Ely, who passed on January 9, 2020 at home. Betty was born in Bloomington to John and Pearl (Galyan) Wampler.

She was raised by her grandparents, John and Sarah Jane Wampler and her aunt, Amy (Wampler) Thompson. Betty is one of nine children; Gladys (Phillip) Boshears, Edward (Wanda) Wampler, Olive (Don) Lake, Estes (Edna) Wampler, Martha (Ed) Minnick, Paul (Denise) Wampler, Jim (Dee) Wampler, and Janet (Cliff) Sadler.

Betty graduated from Unionville High School. She worked for Indiana Cities Water Corporation.

In 1987 Betty married Jay Ely. They resided in Bargersville until they moved to Bloomington. Jay and Betty are members of Sherwood Oaks Church and New Prospect Baptist Church.

Betty and Jay enjoyed traveling in the United States and Canada. She enjoyed reading and baking. Betty enjoyed visiting places she read about in books. They visited Prince Edward Island the setting of Ann of Green Gable books, and DeSmet, South Dakota a setting of one of Laura Ingalls’ Wilder books. She also enjoyed trips with her daughters. Betty also enjoyed collecting dolls and having tea parties with her granddaughters and her great-granddaugthers.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband Jay Ely who preceded her on January 6, 2021, her parents, John and Pearl Wampler; her daughter Karla Young; her grandson, Russell Louis Young; her sister, Gladys Boshears; her brothers, Edward and Estes Wampler; her sisters-in-law, Wanda Wampler, Edna Wampler and Dee Wampler; her brother-in-law, Phillip Boshears; her aunt, Amy Thompson; and cousin, Philip Thompson.

Betty is survived by her children: Bill (Jan) Young, Vicky Young, Beth Ann (Chris) Young, Karla Young, Kevin (Dana) Young; her grandchildren: Heather, Megan, Nicholas, and Kyle; her great-grandchildren: Ellen, Courtney, and Chloe; dear cousins Donna Jo Thompson, and Beverly Petry; her sisters, Olive Lake, Martha Minnick, and Janet Sadler; her brothers Paul and Jim Wampler; and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services for Betty and Jay will be 12:30 pm Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Visitation will be private. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
