OBITUARY: Menomonee Falls News Sept 9, 1927 ....Not in many months has the community received such news of sadness as was conveyed to friends on the death of Mr. Herman Maas, who passed away at his home on Wednesday afternoon August 31st. Death was sudden after a brief but violent illness. He was aged 71 years and 5 days.

Deceased was born in Germany August 26, 1856. Together with his parents the late William and Henrietta (nee Steffen) he came to this country in early childhood. On January 12, 1882 he was married to Miss Philppena Kranz, a daughter of the late George and Margaret Kranz of South Germantown. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. h. Noehren, former pastor of St. Paul's Church. They were the first couple to be married in that church, which was erected the same years. They made their home on a farm in the town of Lisbon. Their very happy union was blessed with two sons and two daughters. They are George Mas of Florida, Alfred, Clara and Tillie Maas at home who mourn the death of a loving and faithful father. On November 4, 1926 Mrs. Herman Maas preceded her husband in death.

....of the departed has not......as so many lives ...., nor has it been spent in in....., or in the pursuit of ungodliness and wickedness; but the deceased has departed this life- and therein all agree that knew him - a good man, as a useful citizen, whose name the records of our community will always delight to mention. He rejoiced, also, to see others prosper. He aided his fellowmen in their useful enterprises, and had his share in advancing the lawful interest of our community and county. He was one of those men on whom a commonwealth looks...its ornament, and whom they are glad to meet in their homes, on the streets, in the assemblies of public..., in the councils of the aged.

The departed ranked among the foremost members of the St. Paul's congregation here. AN early settler in our community he has with others become instrumental in the establishment of a congregation ...belonging to the Evangelical ...of North America. His excellent knowledge and finely discriminating judgement soon caused him to be entrusted with important ...in the congregation. For years he held the office of elder and treasurer, and discharged the functions of those offices with rare tact. He also took an active part in local enterprises, having been a charter member of the Sunny Side Cemetery Association and at the time of his death a member of its Board of Directors. He was Treasurer for a number of years of the Mutual Fire and Storm Insurance Association of the Town of Lisbon. He also served his School District in various ways as Director and Treasurer.

The esteem with which Mr. Maas was held by his friends was evidenced by the mass of beautiful floral tributes sent to the home and the large number of friends who expressed their sympathy at the funeral which was held on Monday afternoon from the home of ST. Paul's Evangelical Church where services were conducted by Rev. Paul Wendt. Beautiful songs were rendered by the church choir. Interment was made in Sunny Side cemetery.

The deceased leaves besides his two sons and daughters two grandchildren: Arnold and Viola Maas and one sister Mrs. John Huberty. His absence will be keenly felt among his friends and the societies in which he belonged. "The day has come, not gone; Thy sun has risen, not set; They life is now beyond The reach of death or change, Not ended, but begun.
O noble soul! O gentle heart! Hail, and farewell."
