Lucille Elizabeth Heitzman passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 in Katy, Texas at the age of 98.

Born on October 14,1922 in Englewood, New Jersey to Fred J. von Dohren and Lucy A. Meder von Dohren, Lucille is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Arthur C. Heitzman.

Lucille’s childhood was spent in nearby Cliffside Park, NJ, where she graduated high school in 1939. She attended Parsons School of Design in New York City, majoring in Interior Design and graduating in 1942. She then worked at the interior design company of F. Schumacher & Co. in New York City as a buyer’s assistant until 1952 when her first child was born.

On September 11, 1948, Lucille married Arthur. The following year they opened their photography studio where she played an integral part in its operation. In 1959, Arthur’s advancing photographic career relocated the family to Houston.

As a devoted wife and mother, family was most important to her. Lucille cherished the holidays, Sunday dinners, and vacations spent together. She instilled many traditions that are carried out to this day.

Lucille and Arthur enjoyed the arts, regularly attending symphony, opera, and ballet performances. They also enjoyed their many travels together. Having a love for gardening, Lucille spent many hours in her greenhouse and yard. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles.

As an artist of varying facets, Lucille displayed her creativity in so many ways. She was instrumental in photographic studio designs and home and garden designs. As a talented seamstress, her creations ranged from clothing, to crafts sold at shows and stores, to professional drapes and home accessories she custom-designed for family and friends.

Lucille has been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since November 21, 1941. She was a member of the Dogwood Trails Garden Club of Houston, serving as president for two years. She was also a member of the Needlework Guild of America, serving as president for one term. She was very active volunteering in her children’s schools and in the PTA. Her talents were further confirmed when she was invited to become a member of Mensa.

Lucille is survived by sister Eleanor Heimburg of New Jersey; son Eric Heitzman and wife Anita of College Station; daughter Laura Marlowe and husband Michael of Allen; and daughter Lisa Mitschke and husband Greg of Katy. Surviving grandchildren are Karin Heitzman Peters and husband Jeremy; Drew Mitschke and wife Sarah; Emily Mitschke Landrum and husband Connor; Miranda Marlowe; and Meredith Marlowe; great-grandchildren, Morgan Peters, Carter Mitschke, and Tinley Mitschke. Also surviving Lucille are several nieces and nephews.

Lucille’s family wishes to extend their heart-felt appreciation to the caregivers at Evergreen Cottages who have been her friends and family for the past six years. Their exceptionally compassionate care is truly treasured.

Final interment services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Houston.
