Daughter of Joseph Scherbaum & Mary Steidl, Anna was born in Falkenau, Bohemia which at the time of her birth was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After WWI in 1918, with the creation of Czechoslovakia, the city of Falkenau was renamed Sokolov.

She immigrated with her parents aboard the "Roland" which arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in 1900. Her family settled in Chicago where her twin brothers (Joseph & Anthony) were born.
