A former Episcopal archdeacon of South Dakota and longtime Indian leader, Vine Deloria, Sr., died February 26 at a Tucson Nursing home. A grandson of Francis Deloria, a Yankton Sioux subchief and son of Philip J. Deloria, son of the first Sioux to become an Episcopalian priest, he was born and enrolled in the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of Fort Yates, SD. He was a lifelong member of the interdenominational Brotherhood of Christian Unity, "the oldest continuous all-Indian organization in the United States" that his father helped found in 1872.
