Inscription

Latin translation: 1703. Sacred to posterity, EDWARD CHAMBERLAYNE wished to be buried here, in a lofty tomb, outside the city limits and next to the public road, in the custom of his ancestors. He was an English worshipper of Christ, a Doctor of Law, descended from the ancient family of the Count of Tanquerville, born at Oddington in 1616. He was fully instructed in grammar at Gloucester, in law at Oxford, and in the liberal arts at London. He travelled through France, Spain, Italy, Hungary, both Bohemias, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. In 1658 he married SUSANNA CLIFORD, who was descended from a knightly family. He fathered nine children, and wrote six books. In the end he departed to the land of oblivion in 1703. By God's grace he was assiduous in doing good to everyone, even including future generations, so that he ordered to be buried with him some of his books, covered in wax, which would perhaps be useful to posterity at some later time. Go hence traveller, and do likewise; God will keep you safe. GUAL HARRIS, M.D. saw to the construction of this monument, which none shall violate unpunished, as a witness of his love and equally his grief - from a friend to a friend.
