Born in San Francisco, he was the son of Mario and Norma (Tognoli) Alioto. He attended Holy Name Grammar School, St. Joseph's Seminary, and St. Ignatius High School. Upon graduation from high school, he attended City College of San Francisco, where he received his associate degree in Accounting. He also spent a few years at the University of San Francisco. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers and Giants fan.
Mario married the love of his life, Maggie, in 1969, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in San Francisco. They had three children, Stefana, Mario and Joseph.
Mario worked on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco for nearly 40 years, opening M.Alioto Seafoods with his brother, Frank, his dad, Mario, and a few other partners. He retired in 1994.

In his free time, Mario spent time with his family, coached baseball and announced high school sporting events for Sonoma Valley High School, earning the nickname "The Voice of the Dragons". He coached the Cubs in Sonoma Valley Babe Ruth from 1978 until 2021, was the assistant coach of the Sonoma Valley High School baseball team since 1993, and announced games for numerous sports teams for the Dragons from 1996 until 2019.
Mario is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret "Maggie" (Graf) Alioto, his daughter, Stefana (Tony), sons, Mario III (Amee), and Joseph (Jill). He is also survived by 2 sisters, Maria and Anna, and 1 brother, Salvatore, by his best friend and brother-in-law, John "Terry" Graf. He was most proud of his 6 grandchildren. He will also be missed by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother, Frank.

Mario was a caring man who wore his heart on his sleeve. He will be remembered for his love of family, zest for life and outgoing spirit.
