Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 5-7 PM Tuesday March 30th at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Ave. West in Cranford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM Wednesday March 31st at St. Michael's Church, 40 Alden St., Cranford. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
Mr. Sandford was a proud veteran of the U.S Army, having served in Korea. He worked for 25 years as an aerospace engineer focusing on propulsion systems and overall safety and reliability systems for Curtiss Wright Corporation, Grumman Engineering Corporation, The Boeing Company, and Douglas Aircraft Company. He was also a mechanical engineering professor at Rutgers University and later a professor at St. Martin's University in Lacey, Washington. While at St. Martin's University, he taught engineering, mathematics and physics until he retired at the age of 80.
Roy was a member of the Catholic Alumni Club of North Jersey in addition to the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the St. Michael's Church Orchestra in Cranford, in which he played the violin. While living in Lacey, Washington, he also played the violin as a member of the St. Anthony's Chamber Orchestra and the Boeing Employees Concert Orchestra. He loved baseball, playing violin, and solving math problems. He was a selfless caregiver to many throughout his entire life. Above all, he was a loving father figure to his many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Jean; his sister Gloria Ann Sandford and his brother Phillip Sandford Sr.; his nephew, Phillip Sandford Jr.; and his aunt, Adele Saloom.
Surviving are his loving sister-in-law, Susan Sandford; his beloved nieces and nephews, Susan Gonzalez and her family, Diane Bryan and her family, the family of Phillip Sandford Jr., and Michael Sandford and his family. In his last years he enjoyed spending time with his many grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandniece and great-grandnephews.
