Japanese Statesman. He served as the acting Prime Minister of Japan from 3 April to 5 April 2000. He was elected to the Japanese House of Councillors in 1986 and became Chief Cabinet Secretary in 1999 under Prime Minister Keizō Obuchi. In April 2000, Prime Minister Obuchi suffered a stroke and fell into a coma. Aoki assumed the role of acting Prime Minister and, to ensure a swift succession, met with other leaders from his political party, the Liberal Democratic Party. They agreed that Yoshirō Mori would become the next Prime Minister.
