Politician. Mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith from 1913 to 1920 as well as alderman on the borough council from 1918. He was actively involved in recruiting during World War I and, as Mayor, he was made an honorary colonel in the British Army. He founded the 20th London Cadet Corps and helped raise the 140th Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery and the 40th Divisional Ammunition Column. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his wartime services. In the 1918 general election he was elected MP for Hammersmith North and was knighted in 1921. He further served as MP for Hammersmith North after the 1922 election.
