Tragedy struck the family in 1918 when Henry's younger sister, Ivy, died during the Spanish Flu epidemic that swept the country. She was 22-years-old.
Henry worked as a section hand for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for a time. He later did odd jobs.
Henry married Mrs. Gertrude May (nee Troesser) Roettgen on 09 Jun 1930. The wedding was performed by Justice of the Peace John G. Leslie.
May was divorced and the mother of several children from her first marriage. Henry and she made their home in Chamois, Missouri.
Henry and May were separated by 1940 and eventually divorced.
He moved to a farm in Loutre Island Township in Montgomery County, Missouri.
Henry suffered a stroke on 17 Jun 1959. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Washington, Franklin County, Missouri for treatment, but died 10 hours later. At the time of his death, he was 68 years, 4 months and 7 days old.
There were no immediate survivors.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; 2 sisters, Ivy Barnhouse and Bessie Duncan; and his former wife.
Henry's body was donated to the St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
