Iran's Top General in Syria and Lebanon and Assassinated Military figure. Brigadier General Mohammed Reza Zahedi (Aka: Hajj Abu Mahdi, Reza Mahdavi, Hassan Mahdavi, Alireza Zahedi, Ali Zahedi), was the former commander of the Air Force and Ground Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He joined the IRGC in 1979 and served as a mid-level officer during the Iran-Iraq War. He next led the 44th Qamar Beni Hashem Division from 1983 to 1986 and later headed the 14th Imam Hossein Division in the IRGC from 1986 until 1991. Between 2005 and 2008, Zahedi held the position of commander of the IRGC ground forces. Concurrently, he assumed leadership of the Thar-Allah base, responsible for the security of the Iranian capital, Tehran. From 2008 to 2017, Zahedi served as the head of the Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon. He was killed, along with other IRGC officers, in an Israeli airstrike that specifically targeted him in the consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria. Zahedi was the most senior IRGC officer killed, since the assassination of Qasem Soleimani by the U.S. strike, on January 3, 2020. On April 13, 2024, Iranian military forces launched approximately 300 drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles at Israel, in stated retaliation, "as punishment" for Zahedi's death.
