Mary Caroline married Edgar Franklin Root, November 23, 1884 in Redding, Shasta County, California. They were the parents of four children, two daughters and two sons. Their youngest daughter Mary Elizabeth died in 1891. They lived on a farm in Cottonwood, Tehama County, California. After the 1900 census Edgar died and Mary moved with her three living children to Oregon to be closer to her father Jim, her two brothers Frank and Tom and her sister Lizzie. Mary's daughter Lulu was married in Oregon in 1908. Mary's two sons James and Claude are living with her in Douglas County, Oregon in 1910. By 1920 her son James had moved to Idaho, Mary had moved to Portland, Oregon and Claude became a crew member on Cargo ships. Very often Mary took care of her sister Lizzie Montgomery Campbell's, daughters Lottie, Minnie, and Katie while living in Portland. Another sister Nancy Montgomery McDermott had a son John Franklin who also visited Mary often. By 1930 Mary has moved to Idaho where she lived with her son James until she died.
