Dorothy Lorene LINGLE was born 12 Jan 1913, in Morgan County, Indiana. She was one of four children and the only daughter of Crawford Claude and Dessie A. (ELLIS) LINGLE. Her brothers were: Otis M. 1906 – 1914, Verless V. 1908 – 1996 and James Francis LINGLE 1918 – 1925. Of the three of them, only Verless lived to adulthood.

Dorothy lived with her family on a farm in Whitaker, Indiana (An unincorporated community in Ray Township, Morgan County, located halfway between Peerless and Gosport). She attended school in the area, but like many rural children at the time, probably quit attending school when she was sixteen, in favor of helping her family full-time on the farm.

While still a teenager, Dorothy met her future husband, Edward Walter HAGAN while skating with friends at a roller skating rink. He asked if she would go out with him and she told him she would if her parents would give permission. Luckily they did and Dorothy and Edward were married on 14 Mar 1931 in Morgan County. Dorothy was 18 and her husband was 26.

Dorothy moved to Bloomington, where Edward had been working in the finishing room of the Showers furniture factory. They rented a small house in the 700 block of West Kirkwood Avenue. In January 1933, they had a son, who they named Edward Junior. They continued to live at that same address for the next six years, Edward working at Showers and Dorothy taking on the traditional role of housewife and mother.

On Sunday, May 28, 1939, Dorothy's life was cut short in a Memorial Weekend boating accident on the White River, six miles southwest of Spencer. She and her husband had decided to enjoy the holiday with their boarder, and his date, and on a whim had decided to meet up with another acquaintance who owned a rowboat. After a short trip down the river, the oarsman turned against the current in order to row upstream. The overloaded rowboat, which was already sitting low in the water, began to take in water. Startled, some of the occupants stood, upsetting the boat. The other woman was rescued by bystanders. Edward managed to swim ashore, but Dorothy and the remaining men lost their lives. Dorothy was 26 at the time of her death.

She was buried in the Gosport cemetery.

Author's note: Dorothy was my grandmother. I compiled the above bio by studying vital statistic documents, census records, and newspaper accounts of her death, as well as including the few recollections that have been passed down orally. The comment about her quitting school early was my conclusion from the notation in the 1930 census that she had not attended school in the last year. Older relatives on the other side of my family tell me it was quite common in rural Indiana at the time for students to drop out after their 16th birthday when schooling was no longer mandatory.
