He was the son of Dr Paulo Agenor do Rio Branco and Dr. Francisca Lebert do Rio Branco.
In March 1952 as Joao do Rio Branco, he married Adrienne McArdle in the District of Columbia.
They were the parents of two children.

Joao Paulo da Silva Paranh do Rio Branco was raised in Pelotas, Brazil and was a former resident of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Educated in France; earned his Master of Arts in Economics from the American University in Washington, D.C. and his Doctorate studies at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a highly decorated diplomatic Foreign Service Officer in Brazil and served as Minister, Secretary of Tourism, Consul General at the United Nations Delegation and Head of the European Department of Affairs. He retired as Ambassador in 1987. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Adrienne McArdle do Rio Branco and his parents, Dr. Francisca Lebert do Rio Branco & Dr. Paulo Agenor do Rio Branco. Survivors include his sister, Francette Deramond; daughters, Sandra Dienst & Virginia Hines; grandchildren, Adrienne Dienst and John Paul Dienst.
