In 1830 the Belgians had revolted against the Dutch oppression and in spite of the armistice (1831)the country still was in a state of war with Belgium. Only in 1839 and under international pressure a peace treaty was finally concluded. For King William the resistance against his plans to marry her probably was one his reasons to abdicate, which he did in 1840. However, the main reason probably was a change in the Constitution, which to a certain extent complicated his autacratic government.
He settled in Berlin, where his mother was born, and henceforth wanted to be called 'King William, Count of Nassau'. His two sons, King William II and Prince Frederick, had an aversion towards his second marriage, his daughter Marianne did not.
