PASS CHRISTIAN -- Paul Bode, a longtime resident of Pass Christian, active in so many institutions and organizations here and along the Gulf Coast, died Sunday evening, January 31, in Memorial Hospital at Gulfport after a brief illness. The Sun Herald published in its January 23rd issue, the last of Mr. Bode's periodical Letters to the Editor, this one announcing the beginning of his 80th year and urging readers to hang onto their sense of humor and to savor their twilight years, just as he was doing.

Paul Bode was born on December 14, 1919, in Rochester, New York, to the Reverend Dietrich A. Bode, pastor of the German Reformed Church, and Clara M. Bixler Bode, a poetess and professor of Latin at Ohio State University. After completing an A.B. at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., and an M.A. at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, both degrees in Mathematics and Physics, Paul began work as a graduate fellow at the University of Virginia, which was interrupted by four years' active duty in the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Phoenix from 1942 to 1946. Mr. Bode completed 27 years of service in the Navy, retiring as Commander in 1969.

Paul Bode had a long distinguished professional career in teaching, beginning in the Math Department at McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1941 before being commissioned in the Navy in 1942. Beginning in 1946, after his years of active duty during WWII, he served as Head of the Math and Science Department at the Punahou School in Honolulu; Head of Math Department at Blair Academy, Blairstown, N.J.; Founding Headmaster of the Southwest Episcopal School in Houston, Texas, and Mathematics teacher at St. John's School in that city; Assistant Headmaster at St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas; Headmaster of Girl's Preparatory School in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Headmaster of Tuscaloosa Academy in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Headmaster of Coast Episcopal Schools in Pass Christian; Headmaster of The Wildwood School in Columbia, S.C.; and as Assistant Headmaster of The Catawba School in Rock Hill, S.C.

Upon retirement in 1984, Paul Bode and his wife, Ann, settled in Pass Christian, where Paul was actively involved in many aspects of the community he so loved. Through the years, he was twice elected President of Pass Christian Rotary; at Trinity Episcopal Church, P.C., he was a vestryman, an adult Sunday School teacher, and president of Men of Trinity; he served as vice-president of Friends of the Library, P.C.; treasurer of Friends of the Long Beach Library; president of P.C. Isles Civic Association; area co-ordinator for ''Polio Plus Program'' for P.C. Rotary Club; alderman, Ward 2, P.C. ''chaplain'' for the P.C. Board of Aldermen; president of the Metropolitan Dinner Club; board member and chairman of the Mississippi Coastal Clean-Up; president of the Pass Christian Historical Society; and a director of the Coast Community Foundation. This past year Paul Bode was presented the Citizen of the Year award at the annual Pass Christian Chamber of Commerce/Rotary Club Dinner and featured as ''The Person of the Week Along the Coast'' on WLOX-TV.

Paul Bode was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend and Mrs. Dietrich Bode; and two sisters, Lorna Guthmuller and Helda Topp.
